How to Choose Your Brand Colors

How to Choose Your Brand ColorsWondering how to choose your brand colors? Well, it's not as complicated as it may seem. When it comes to website design, one of the first questions I ask my clients is “How do you want your visitor to feel when they land on your website?”  It’s such an important question because all the key design elements are dependent on the answer. But what’s that got to do with the colors you choose? Practically everything.

Color is a huge part of what makes up the feeling of your brand and your website!

There are 3 main colors you’ll need to consider when deciding how to choose your brand colors, and planning your website:

  • Dominant – choose a dominant color as your brand color to set the tone.
  • Accent – choose 1 to 2 accent colors to create a color scheme for your website and draw attention to important elements (headings, buttons, etc.)
  • Background – choose a background color to complete your design.

You’ll only want to choose 3 to 5 colors max… no more than that. Because if you get too crazy with the number of colors, your brand message becomes less clear.

If you already have a logo, you’ll want to ensure one of the primary colors of your logo is used as your dominant color. If you don’t have a logo, you can choose a dominant color based on the feeling you want to portray.

The big brands you love don’t pick their dominant/brand colors by accident. They’re strategically chosen based on their branding and marketing initiatives. Colors have the ability to attract specific types of shoppers, and can even alter consumer behaviors. Pretty powerful stuff, isn’t it? So how do you know how to choose your brand colors? I’ve created a handy graphic (below) that outlines the feelings behind certain colors that will help you determine the best colors for your brand
